A VIEW TO 2008:
CANDIDATES RESPOND TO IFPTE's PRESIDENTIAL SURVEY
In preparation for the upcoming 2008 presidential elections, IFPTE prepared and distributed a presidential candidates survey to those persons who had declared their candidacy by July 6, 2007. With such a large field of contenders, it is important that our members are knowledgeable about the candidates' beliefs and ideas on issues affecting our membership as well as national labor issues. While IFPTE's Executive Council is likely to endorse a candidate in the future, this piece is not an endorsement. Rather, it is a dialogue and is intended to be another resource for our members to make an informed decision on the best candidate to hold the office of President of the United States.
Survey questions were formulated based on issues relevant to IFPTE and to the national labor movement as a whole. Questions were asked on the Employee Free Choice Act, pensions/social security, taxpayers' resources/union busting, privatization of federal/public sector jobs, affordable healthcare, guest-worker programs, support for NASA, globalization/trade policies, and collective bargaining protections. As we receive responses from the candidates, we will publish them to the site. We will also inform you if any candidate(s) does not submit a response.
IFPTE has also requested the participation of leading candidates in personal interviews. The message below from President Junemann describes the interview process.
BROTHERS AND SISTERS,
Next year's Presidential campaign will heat up quickly. As the campaign season approaches, it is our goal, if not our obligation, to present you with as much information as we can about each candidate. Toward that end, IFPTE has sent a comprehensive survey to all declared Presidential Candidates, and we will post all of the responses on the IFPTE webpage as they are returned.
I recently had an opportunity to meet with former US Senator John Edwards and interviewed him about issues important to our union and our members. The interview can be read in our quarterly magazine, the IFPTE OUTLOOK.
Our intention is to reach out to each of the leading candidates in both parties to give them equal time and an equal opportunity to offer their views and opinions, and print those interviews in future issues of the IFPTE OUTLOOK.
I hope you find these interviews informative.
In Solidarity,
Gregory J. Junemann
