UPE's MEMBERSHIP DRIVE HAS BEGUN!

07/23/10

Fellow PBGC Colleagues,

We would like to bring you up to speed concerning recent events regarding the UPE election schedule and the rumors that a group of employees are trying to replace our union with their own.

First, our Interim Assembly (IA) has developed a schedule to get us to the elections of the next governing body outline in our new Constitution. Below is a summary of the key dates, and for the full detailed schedule click here. Only those who join as dues paying members before 7:00PM on September 1, 2010 will be able to vote in this first election. To join, simply fill out a SF1187 form and drop off with Interim Assembly Co-Chairs Anna Torres or Synthia Harden, or Secretary Michael O’Connell. You can get a copy of a SF1187 on the UPE website: http://ifpte.org/pbgc/ If you want to run for office, you must join before the end of the nomination period as only members may run for office.

Delegates [unit specific]
One Delegate can be elected from each unit (five units in total), and if any unit gets more than 50 members by 7:00PM on July 14, 2010 they will get an extra Delegate. The five units are:

1) COO,
2) CIPO,
3) CFO,
4) CIO, and
5) CMO/OPEA/OGC/OIG.

Second, some of you have heard that PBGC employees Stuart Bernsen and Richard Anderson have created an organization to replace the Union of Pension Employees (UPE), IFPTE Local 76. Their organization is called the Independent Union of Pension Employee for Democracy and Justice (IUPEDJ). They have filed for election with the Federal Labor Relations Authority (FLRA), which is a government agency that governs labor relations between federal agencies and employees, claiming there is significant interest among PBGC employees who wish to have the IUPEDJ be the sole collective bargaining agent for all PBGC employees. If the FLRA finds there is significant enough interest after reviewing Mr. Bernsen and Mr. Anderson’s petition, they will schedule an election in which all PBGC employees would vote to decide to stay with UPE, IFPTE Local 76 or to go with Mr. Bernsen and Mr. Anderson’s IUPEDJ organization.

We will keep you posted on any updates, but in the meantime if you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact us.
