Center for Community Change Recognizes Staff Union

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Tuesday, September 6, 2016

(WASHINGTON)--The Center for Community Change (CCC), a national non-profit dedicated to community organizing and the building of social movements, has voluntarily recognized the formation of a union to represent its staff. CCC has also affirmed the selection of the International Federation of Professional and Technical Engineers (IFPTE Local 70) who will serve as the staff’s collective bargaining representative.

“As an organization that has worked for decades to advance the cause of empowerment and raise the voices of low-income people, especially people of color, this move is consistent with the organization’s mission and our long tradition of supporting collective bargaining in the workplace” said Deepak Bhargava, Executive Director of Center for Community Change.

In a statement of solidarity, the staff organizing committee for the union said:

“We are proud to have successfully pursued the formation of a union that honestly represents the community of interest in our workplace and will give workers a voice and the power to strengthen the institution through our collective agency. We hope having a staff union will lead to increased democracy within the organization and allow us to fully live out our values and work towards transformational change.”

Both staff and management assert that the formation of the union aligns with the organization’s longstanding support for unionization, collective bargaining, and worker voice on the job. The formation of the union at CCC emerges at a time when many of our peer organizations in the progressive movement are forming their own staff unions.

"CCC has joined a growing number of nonprofits that recognize the many ways in which unionization empowers working people and helps sustain and grow organizations,” said Alan Barber, the president of IFPTE Local 70. “We welcome CCC to local 70 and look forward to collaborating with them as they work towards a first contract."
