IFPTE Veterans' Committee Hosts Its Fall 2017 Meeting

This week the IFPTE Veterans Committee held its Fall meeting, focusing on the legislative issues before Congress that are impacting Veterans.

Hosted by IFPTE Veterans Committee Chairman and IFPTE Local 195 President Tim Rudolph, Veterans Committee members agreed to work against legislation moving through the House that will end the VA Choice Act and replace it with a new policy that will open up critical Veterans Administration inhouse services to be contracted out to costly private sector entities that provide inferior services.

The Veterans Committee also heard a report from SPEEA/IFPTE Local 2001’s Michael Shea about the SPEEA member survey that found, among other things, that the number one issue that SPEEA’s Veterans care about is health care services, including mental health, as well as working to curb Veterans homelessness. Mike Shea reported that upwards of 10% of SPEEA’s membership are Veterans, with some SPEEA members currently serving in the national guard.

The Veterans Committee also heard from AFL-CIO Union Veteran Council (UVC) Executive Director Will Attig, who reported that the UVC is working to help CLC’s and State Feds establish Veterans Committees/Councils throughout the United States, with the goal of bringing union Veterans together to advocate for union and economic issues facing Veterans.

Finally, the Committee heard from IFPTE Local 1937’s Kenneth Parment about online commissary shopping privileges for Veterans. IFPTE represented Veterans from Locals 1, 12, 20, 30, 195, 1937, and 2001 participated. The next Veterans Committee meeting with be held in the March/April, 2018 timeframe. All IFPTE Veterans who wish to join the committee are welcome. Please contact Matt Biggs or Candace Rhett at (202) 239-4880.
