Local 12 Visits Capitol Hill in Support of Bremerton Naval Shipyard Workers

IFPTE Local 12’s Darci Shapley and Christine Wulf travelled to Washington, DC to visit with Washington State lawmakers on several key issues facing members of their union.

Specifically, Shapley and Wulf, who were joined by IFPTE legislative staff on the Hill, briefed Hill offices about Local 12’s concerns related to the Navy’s potential effort to privatize functions related to the recycling of the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise’s nuclear reactor compartments and radioactive systems.

Local 12 informed staff that such an effort would not only be much more costly, but that this type of work is a core federal function performed by highly skilled and trained workers at the Bremerton Naval Shipyard. The two correctly pointed out that privatization of this work would also pose countless safety and other concerns to the public and workers.

Wulf and Shapley met with staff in the offices of Representative Derek Kilmer, and Senators Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell.
