Local 196 Endorsed Safety Legislation Passes Assembly--Awaits Governor Murphy's Signature

IFPTE endorsed legislation passed overwhelmingly this week in the New Jersey Assembly. The legislation, which was being championed by IFPTE Local 196 and is sponsored by Assemblywoman Shevonda Sumter, puts in place strong worker protections for public employees working on the State’s highways.

The bill, which passed with 75 Assembly members voting yes and one member voting present, will now go to Governor Murphy’s desk for signing. In anticipation of Monday’s vote, Local 196 President/Atlantic Area Vice President, Sean McBride, and Business Manager, Jimmy Robertello, led a contingent of Local 196 members to the State Capitol in support of the bill. McBride commented, saying that, “IFPTE members working along our State’s highways and roads will finally see strong safety measures in place due to passage of Assemblywoman Sumter’s and Senator Rice’s bill. Given the fact that this legislation passed unanimously in Committee, the Assembly, and Senate reflects the fact that these safety requirements needed to be put into law. We look forward to Governor Murphy signing it into law.”

Text of the bill can be found here.
