Having been the one who needed help from food banks and other community services when she was a single parent with four your children, Jo Miklos puts a lot of energy in giving back.

She became involved "because of agencies out there that helped me." At the time, she had two sets of twins who ere 3 and 4 years old.

Miklos, a Wichita Council Rep, serves as president of the employee-driven Good Neighbor Fund (GNF) at Spirit AeroSystems. GNF kicked off a campaign to increase employee giving -- with a goal of 40% of employees at Spirit contributing through payroll deduction.

The GNF board, which includes eight employees, makes decisions on where to distribute the money donated to the fund.

Recent examples include:

--Kansas Food Bank -- which requested a grant to purchase food
--American Red Cross -- to help families in Mulvane, Kansas rebuild after flooding destroyed their homes
--Urban Assistance League -- to provide vouchers for young students to buy new back-to-school clothes in cases where they might only have one or two sets of clothes.
Helping comes naturally to Miklos, who see how the results of the help she received in her children, who are now grown.

"They never would have become who they are if it hadn't been for the help we received," she said. "I never forgot -- that one thing makes a difference in someone's life," she said.

She also served on Team Spirit board (employees helping charitable causes at the holidays, for example) and Spirit of the Harvest to help the food bank. She also supported Tour De Cure for the American Diabetes Association. She still volunteers twice a week at a thrift shop run by the Mennonites in a nearby community -- to raise money for the health and welfare of those in need.

Her focus on helping is what she believes in about SPEEA, and why she also volunteers as a Council Rep. "SPEEA is for the employees -- for the people."

A service procurement purchase agent who has worked in aerospace (Boeing and Spirit for a total of 27 years), she believes every employee is entitled to a contract and appreciation.

"No matter what level -- treat people with dignity and respect and they will go above and beyond."
