SPEEA-Local 2001’s Annual Convention and Leadership Conference Focuses on Empowering Activists

This past weekend, SPEEA activists gathered from all bargaining units to conduct union business, network and train to understand their roles and encourage newer members to get involved. With the conference theme of “Empowering Future Activists,” about 160 Council Reps, activists, younger members and labor guests took part in related workshops. One of the workshops, “Attitudes of Young Professionals towards Unions: Engaging Future Union Leaders,” invited younger members to build an action plan for outreach. The legislative workshop also featured a Capitol Hill update from Senator Patty Murray’s labor director Letty Mederos.

At the SPEEA Council convention the day before, on June, 9, several Council Reps stepped up to run for Council officer positions. Congratulations to newly elected SPEEA Council officers: Chair Theryl Johnson, Seattle, Treasurer Emily Brent-Fulps, Portland, Oregon, and Ben Blankley, Wichita, Kansas.

IFPTE President Greg Junemann, and Secretary-Treasurer Paul Shearon addressed attendees, while former IFPTE President and current Department for Professional Employees (DPE) President Paul Almeida delivered Saturday’s keynote address.
