A Feminist Response to COVID-19 (WSN Spotlight)

A group of Canadian feminist organizations have developed a comprehensive guide for actions Canada can take locally and globally in response to the pandemic. The IFPTE Women’s Solidarity Network came across this newly released brief last week and it is definitely a must share item!

Titled, A Feminist Action Agenda for Canada’s Global Response to COVID-19, this report has the backing of Nobel Women’s Initiative, Oxfam Canada, Inter Pares, Equality Fund, Amnesty International Canada, and Action Canada for Sexual Health & Rights.

Highlights of recommendations include:

  • Ensure women’s rights and gender justice are at the heart of the COVID-19 global response and recovery measures;

  • Increase women’s rights and feminist movements’ resources and leadership;

  • Prioritize violence against women and girls (VAWG)/sexual and gender based violence (SGBV) and sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) programming in COVID-19 response;

  • Reduce and redistribute unpaid care responsibilities through COVID-19 aid; and

  • Support respect for human rights and protect women’s human rights and LGBTI rights defenders in the pandemic response.
