Federal Government Shutdown Averted Again - IFPTE Responds

IFPTE President, Matt Biggs, and Secretary-Treasurer, Gay Henson, released the following joint statement in response to this week’s deal to keep the federal government funded into early next year:

“IFPTE, which represents tens of thousands of federal workers throughout the United States whose paychecks depend on Congress fulfilling their most fundamental responsibility – funding the government – was pleased that House Speaker Johnson ultimately decided to reject the vocal minority in his Caucus that actually wanted to shutter the government by putting a bill on the House floor that passed with bipartisan support.  That said, the House Republican majority’s utter dysfunction and inability to govern left millions of workers once again holding their collective breath in anticipation of a government shutdown.  The Continuing Resolution that passed, and that will be signed into law by President Biden, will keep the government funded until early next year, which is a good thing.  However, come early January, we all will again be asking the question: ‘Will the House Republican majority finally get their act together and govern?  Let’s hope so, but if they do not, IFPTE, like we have already done twice this year, will be making sure that our members’ livelihoods and interests are properly represented on Capitol Hill.”
