IFPTE and AALJ Urge Senators to Confirm Martin O'Malley for SSA Commissioner

With the Senate wrapping up for the Senate’s 2023 session, IFPTE and the Association of Administrative Law Judges-IFPTE Judicial Council 1 (AALJ) urged Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and all Senators to confirm former Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley to be the next Commissioner of the Social Security Administration (SSA).

In letters to Leader Schumer and Senators, AALJ President Som Ramrup joined IFPTE President Matt Biggs and Secretary-Treasurer Gay Henson to show support for Gov. O’Malley as “ideally qualified“ to serve as SSA Commissioner, noting that, “[h]e has articulated a clear vision of responsible and accountable leadership and recognizes that effective delivery of governmental services and respect for the agency’s workforce go hand-in-hand. “

The letter also discusses IFPTE’s support for SSA and recognition that, “Americans who rely on Social Security benefits and the federal employees who strive to deliver effective services to all Americans need a highly qualified Senate-confirmed Commissioner to lead SSA.“

Gov. O’Malley was advanced out of the Senate Finance Committee with bipartisan support on November 28, 2023. His nomination is expected to be considered for confirmation on the Senate floor on December 18.
