Gov. O’Malley’s leadership at SSA “will ensure that current and future Social Security recipients will receive the benefits and world-class service that they deserve”

WASHINGTON, DC – The executive officers of the International Federation of Professional and Technical Engineers (IFPTE) and Hon. Sommattie Ramrup, President of the Association of Administrative Law Judges, IFPTE Judicial Council 1, issued the following statement on the occasion of the United States Senate’s confirmation of Gov. Martin O’Malley to serve as Commissioner of the Social Security Administration.

IFPTE President Matt Biggs:

“Governor O’Malley’s swift confirmation and strong bipartisan support serve as a testament to his lifetime of service, putting outcomes and results over political considerations.  As someone who grew up in Maryland and graduated from its flagship university, I know firsthand the real and lasting benefits that Martin O’Malley delivered during his eight years as Maryland’s Governor.  Just as he has always placed a premium on making sure that government worked for working people, Gov. O’Malley will ensure that current and future Social Security recipients will receive the benefits and world-class service that they deserve.”

IFPTE Secretary-Treasurer Gay Henson:

“Today is not just a win for those of us who believe the Social Security Administration deserves a confirmed leader who has the mandate and the vision to modernize this pillar of the New Deal, it also stands as a proud day for Senators from both parties who believe that Congress can function and deliver for the American people. All Democrats who were present and several Republicans voted to confirm Gov. O’Malley, a sign of their shared recognition that he is the right leader at this important time for the Social Security Administration.”

AALJ President Sommattie Ramrup:

“On behalf of the members of the Association of Administrative Law Judges, I am thrilled to welcome Governor O’Malley to the Social Security Administration, and I look forward to working closely with him to address the challenges facing the agency. This includes strengthening our nation’s retirement security and improving the disability determination process that AALJ members across the nation are a part of. Over the years, Governor O’Malley has proven, both in deeds and words, his commitment to inspiring dedicated public sector workers by giving them the resources and direction they need to succeed. I join civil servants and unions across the federal sector in celebrating his confirmation tonight.”

IFPTE is a labor union representing 90,000 workers in the public, private, and federal sectors, including 1,200 Administrative Law Judges  at the Social Security Administration.
