WASHINGTON, DC – IFPTE local and national leaders representing tens of thousands of workers in the energy and health sectors issued the following joint statement in support of their Ukrainian counterparts:

Today we express support and respect for our Ukrainian sisters and brothers who work in that nation's energy and health sectors, particularly those who have been targeted by Russia's armed forces as part of that nation's brutal and despicable assault on its neighboring country. On behalf of our members who work in these sectors, including thousands who work in nuclear power plants in Canada and the United States, the International Federation of Professional and Technical Engineers (IFPTE) stands in solidarity with the workers in Chernobyl and Zaporizhzhia, and the doctors, nurses, and other hospital personnel, who continue to stay at their stations throughout this tragedy and at great risk to their own personal safety.

Their bravery demonstrates once again that those who work in the energy and health sectors work on the front line, as they protect energy supplies and the general public through wars, natural disasters and other national emergencies. The fact that the Russian army has purposefully targeted nuclear power plants, other energy infrastructure, and hospital employees and their patients is a testament to the important work that these Ukrainians do.

We urge IFPTE members to join us in donating to the organizations listed below that are supporting all frontline workers and their fellow citizens in Ukraine who have been attacked as part of the Russian army's senseless escalation of the murder of innocent people. We join our sisters and brothers in the IAFF in saluting their brave counterparts who suddenly find themselves on the frontlines of a war, and we offer our support to these proud Ukrainians as they demonstrate every minute of every day the resolve, dignity and determination of their people.
