OFL Statement on National Day of Mourning

The National Day of Mourning, or Workers' Mourning Day is observed annually in Canada on April 28. It commemorates workers who have been killed, injured or suffered illness due to workplace related hazards and occupational exposures.

On this year’s National Day of Mourning, we’ll be reflecting on the workers who died or fell ill while working through the COVID-19 pandemic. We demand that Premier Ford commit to the long overdue health and safety recommendations that could have prevented countless deaths.

We’re calling on our provincial leaders to immediately:

  • Legislate permanent paid sick days for all workers

  • Provide the highest quality and amount of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to all workers

  • Vaccinate equitably and strategically, starting with front-line workers and impacted communities

  • Ensure all workers are covered by the workers’ compensation system

  • Legislate and enforce preventative training standards

We must also take decisive action to prevent any more workers from being killed or injured on the job. Help us do that by sending an email to Doug Ford and your MPP demanding action on long overdue health and safety measures. Take action here.
