Amy Chin-Lai
Southeast Area VP

Amy serves as the President of the Nonprofit Professional Employees Union (NPEU), IFPTE Local 70, which empowers 2,000 members at over 50 nonprofit organizations nationwide to advocate for their colleagues and defend workers’ rights. Amy was appointed the Southeast Region Vice President of IFPTE in November 2025.

In her time as a union leader, Amy has seen the full spectrum of unique challenges facing nonprofit workers and thoughtfully implemented creative solutions. Amy has scaled up the union, addressed challenges of rapid growth, and set the union on a path of sustainable organizing.

As a software engineer at Action Network, Amy started getting involved in her workplace by fighting against salary inequities. She organized her colleagues and led the bargaining committee to negotiate a landmark collective bargaining agreement that has raised standards across the nonprofit tech industry.

Amy was elected NPEU Vice President for Representation in the summer of 2022, where she trained and supported stewards at other shops. In the fall of 2023, Amy was appointed to serve as the Interim President of the local and was subsequently elected President. In the time she has been President, NPEU has negotiated over a dozen successor contracts and 15 strong first contracts, including the Urban Institute and ACLU national staff, which have almost doubled the local’s membership. She takes an active role in empowering and amplifying other members, introducing an innovative bargaining training and guiding member leaders. During her time as President, NPEU has multiplied its political impact, doubled staff capacity, increased member engagement, and is evolving into the union that its workers deserve.

In her free time, Amy enjoys walking her dog, Axel, crocheting, and trying to find the best Tex-Mex in DC.
