After claiming they would not cut Medicaid, House Republican led Commerce Committee passed bill to slash $715B from the program

While the Joint Committee on Taxation found that it would cost taxpayer $4.9 trillion to make the Trump tax cuts for billionaires permanent, House Speaker Mike Johnson continued to claim this week that there would be no cuts to Medicaid, saying this past Wednesday that, “We’re not cutting Medicaid.”  Unfortunately that’s not true at all, as the Republican led House Commerce Committee voted out legislation this week to gut $715B from the Medicaid program, while the Republican led Agriculture Committee voted to approve $300B in cuts from the food stamp and other nutritional programs.  IFPTE Locals 20 and 21, and the IFPTE international, are among the many Unions fighting against these cuts.  IFPTE’s executive officers commented, with President Matt Biggs saying that, “both the Medicaid and SNAP programs in States and Localities across the United States are heavily dependent on federal resources to continue to provide these vital services and what the Republican led House did this week was put us one step closer to throwing 8 million people off of the Medicaid program, and millions more losing food stamps and other food assistance,” and Secretary-Treasurer, Gay Henson noting that, “if these cuts were permitted to stand, it would lead to huge budget shortfalls across State and Local governments, and could lead to lost public sector jobs.”  IFPTE will continue to work against these cuts as the budget reconciliation process move along.  In the meantime we continue to encourage IFPTE members to send your own letters to lawmakers here.
