IFPTE Condemns the Failure to Fund the Government on the Republican Majority in Congress and the Trump Administration
Union continues to call for a “truly bipartisan funding measure that also includes ironclad impoundment prevention language”
WASHINGTON, DC – International Federation of Professional and Technical Engineers (IFPTE) executive officers issued the following statements in response to the federal government shutdown:
President Matt Biggs: “Since his first day in office, President Trump has made clear that he does not appreciate the role of a professional civil service or understand the link between the work of our dedicated civil servants and the vast services they provide the American public. That we find ourselves at this point should come as a shock to no one. The only surprise is that there is actually something this administration doesn’t want to own: a completely avoidable government shutdown. The president and his followers in Congress can continue their feckless propaganda campaign aimed at blaming everyone else for this failure, but the fact remains that their party controls all three branches of government. Fortunately, rational members of the House and Senate stand ready to negotiate a path forward, end the shutdown, fund the government, and fix the looming healthcare crisis. We are hopeful that there is a quick end to this shutdown. In the meantime, IFPTE continues to urge Congressional leaders to pass a truly bipartisan funding measure that also includes ironclad impoundment prevention language.”
Secretary-Treasurer Gay Henson: “In 2023, Project 2025 architect and Heritage Foundation leader, Russell Vought, shared his plan to demonize federal workers, make them “villains” and cause them to be “traumatically affected.” Today, as the head of the administration’s Office of Management and Budget, Vought is attempting to make that misguided vision a reality by foisting a completely avoidable shutdown on our nation. What he will soon discover, however, is what we already know: the American people rely on the quiet, reliable service of our federal workers for vital benefits and services every single day. Once this shutdown transforms average citizens into angry constituents, members of Congress will be joining our call for President Trump, Speaker Johnson, and Leader Thune to begin negotiating in good faith, end the shutdown, fund the government, and fix the looming healthcare crisis.”
IFPTE is a labor union representing upwards of 90,000 across North America, including upwards of 30,000 federal workers.
