IFPTE Continues Opposing Budget Reconciliation Bill’s Disastrous Medicaid Cuts
Cuts will result in hospital closures, ban state government AI regulations,
and limit supplemental nutrition for working families
As Senate Republicans try to hastily assemble their version of a budget reconciliation bill that extends tax cuts for the wealthiest individuals and for large corporations on the backs of working people, IFPTE and our coalition partners sent a letter to Senate Leadership opposing key provisions in the Senate bill that cut over $850 billion from Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act, and cut $300 billion from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). These cuts will have far-reaching impacts on everyday working Americans, their families, and their communities, resulting in 16 million Americans losing health care, risking closure of 338 rural hospitals across the U.S, potentially leaving 2.5 million children at risk of losing nutrition benefits, and driving up health care costs for all Americans.
IFPTE also joined an AFL-CIO-led letter requesting Senate Republicans remove language in the budget reconciliation bill that would prohibit state and local governments from enacting laws, policies, and regulations on artificial intelligence (AI). While lawmakers and governments at the state and local level are engaging with unions and the public to protect rights at work, privacy rights, public safety, and the appropriate uses of AI, some lawmakers in D.C. are catering to the tech industry and corporate interests.
