IFPTE Women’s Solidarity Network Encourages All IFPTE Members to Participate in the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence

The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, observed from November 25 to December 10, is a global call to end violence against women and girls. It emphasizes human rights and gender justice, highlighting the disproportionate impact on marginalized groups.

December 3, the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD), falls within this campaign. Proclaimed by the United Nations in 1992, IDPD promotes understanding of disability issues and advocates for the dignity, rights, and well-being of persons with disabilities. Women and girls with disabilities are particularly vulnerable, facing up to ten times the risk of experiencing gender-based violence compared to those without disabilities. Alarmingly, studies indicate that 40% to 68% of young women with disabilities experience sexual violence before the age of 18.

On December 6, Canada observes the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women, commemorating the 1989 murder of 14 female engineering students at l'École Polytechnique de Montréal. Known informally as White Ribbon Day, it is a time to reflect on the ongoing prevalence of gender-based violence, honor the memory of those who have been lost, and mobilize collective efforts to create a safer society for women and girls.

The 16 Days of Activism is a powerful reminder of the need for solidarity, awareness, and action to eliminate all forms of gender-based violence, ensuring no one—regardless of gender, ability, or background—is left behind.

The IFPTE Women’s Solidarity Network (WSN) invites you to join the Canadian Labour Congress (CLC) for a virtual fireside chat on Dec 9 about the pressing challenge of third-party violence and harassment at work and how unions are taking action. Find out how workers experience gender-based violence and harassment from third parties, explore the limits of current approaches, and highlight effective solutions to this growing crisis.
