Members of Nonprofit Professional Employees Union Gather to Amplify Union Power

On October 12, members of NPEU/IFPTE Local 70, which represents workers at dozens of nonprofit organizations nationwide, attended a happy hour to learn more about IFPTE's Legislative Action Education Program (LEAP) PAC.  NPEU Vice President for Representation, Amy Chin-Lai, kicked off the event by talking about the critical role that LEAP plays in the union's legislative and advocacy efforts, then introduced IFPTE Secretary-Treasurer Gay Henson.

"As individuals, it can be hard for us to break through all the noise in the political and legislative arena to make our voices heard," Chin-Lai said.  "But by many of us making small, recurring contributions to LEAP over time, we have the ability to be heard and to effectively advance issues that benefit our members."

Secretary-Treasurer Henson spoke about how LEAP helped her home Local, IFPTE Local 1937, when an employer wanted to outsource her members' jobs.  "We had leaders of Congress who were ready to stand up and fight for our members because we had already established a relationship with them through LEAP," Henson said.  "These elected officials already knew who we were and how this outsourcing scheme would harm our members, and they joined us in our successful effort to shut it down."
