NDP Wins Majority Government in Manitoba Election

On October 3, Manitobans elected the New Democratic Party (NDP) to form the next provincial government. In this historic election, Manitoba is the first Canadian province to elect a First Nations premier, NDP leader Wab Kinew. This is a moment of immense significance in the annals of Canadian politics. The landmark achievement occurred in tandem with a resounding victory for the NDP, which secured a majority government. The NDP's triumph can be largely attributed to an "orange wave" that swept through the suburbs of Winnipeg.

Part of that “orange wave” was WAPSO/IFPTE Local 162’s Labour Relations staffer Tracy Schmidt who ran as the NDP candidate in the battleground riding of Rossmere in northeast Winnipeg. Tracy started her labour career with the Canadian Union of Postal Workers. After going back to school to become a labour and employment lawyer, she joined WAPSO as a valued staff member.

IFPTE is proud and honoured to see the successful election of one of our own and we sincerely congratulate Tracy on becoming the next Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for Rossmere.
