Coalition Letter with 186 Signatories, Including IFPTE, Urges Education Dept. Not to Make Unlawful Changes to Student Loan Forgiveness Programs
IFPTE is among the 186 democracy, labor, civil rights, student, economic justice, and other organizations sending a dire warning to the U.S. Department of Education about the the Trump Administration’s radical overhaul of the student loan safety net, including the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program (PSLF).
The coalition letter, led by Student Borrower Protection Center (SBPC) and Democracy Forward, was filed in response to the Department of Education’s notice of its intent to establish Negotiated Rulemaking to implement an Executive Order (EO) by President Trump. The EO seeks to retaliate against workers and organizations across the country that support people and communities in marginalized and economically vulnerable circumstances, and who have been targeted by Trump Administration executive actions.
In particular, the letter opposes the Trump administration’s proposed changes to Pay As You Earn (PAYE) and Income-Contingent Repayment (ICR) repayment plans, Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF). The letter also notes opposition to the Trump EO that would limit PSFL for borrowers who are employed by organizations that that the Administration deems as their political opposition.
IFPTE is committed to working with our coalition partners to oppose changes to PSLF, PAYE, ICR, and other federal programs that ease the debt burden of student borrowers.
