Expanding Our Scope: SUP/IFPTE Local 160 Leads Saskatchewan NDP Members on Tours of Ontario’s Nuclear Facilities
With the emerging global consensus that the path to a net-zero emission future will require a dramatic expansion of nuclear power, the Society of United Professionals (SUP/IFPTE Local 160) has been engaged with stakeholders and policymakers inside and outside of Ontario’s borders.
Many of Canada’s provinces are looking for opportunities to expand their electricity generation beyond oil, gas, and coal. For these provinces, Ontario’s nuclear generation has great appeal. In July, Society President Rebecca Caron led a delegation on a three-day tour of six nuclear facilities across Ontario. Sites visited included the NWMO’s Discover & Demonstration Centre, the McMaster University research reactor, Bruce Power’s Bruce A reactor, OPG's Western Waste Management site, BWXT Peterborough, and Cameco’s Port Hope Conversion Facility.
