IFPTE Condemns NASA Closure of Goddard Institute for Science Studies

IFPTE held a press conference this week in New York condemning NASA’s closure of the Goddard Institute for Science Studies (GISS), located at Columbia University.  The closure comes with no explanation from NASA and will leave upwards of 100 researchers and scientists, including 21 IFPTE-represented NASA workers, without space.  IFPTE President Matt Biggs informed the gathered press that the closure was “Short-sighted, wasteful and fiscally irresponsible,” while Legislative Director, Faraz Khan, warned that it “will threaten America’s leadership in earth and planetary science research.”

DOGE and NASA are moving forward with the closure, even though taxpayers have just paid $6 million for upgrades to the GISS facility, and there is a lease on the property running through August 2031, costing taxpayers $3 million annually.
