IFPTE Condemns Trump Administration Plan to Fire Federal Employees During a Government Shutdown
Union says OMB Director’s plan is “cruel and morally bankrupt”
WASHINGTON, DC – The International Federation of Professional and Technical Engineers (IFPTE), representing 90,000 workers across North America, including upwards of 34,000 federal workers employed by the United States government, issued the following statement in response to the Trump Administration’s reported plans to fire federal workers in the event of a government shutdown:
“OMB Director Russ Vought made clear over many years his disdain for our federal government, our federal employees, and the services that they provide to the American public. Now, as the President is preparing to lock federal workers out of their jobs due to his refusal to negotiate a bipartisan funding deal to fund our government agencies, OMB Director Vought is instructing agencies to identify jobs to eliminate across all government agencies.
Make no mistake, Mr. Vought is trying to ruin the careers of dedicated public servants who take the oath to serve our nation and defend the Constitution. This is not only cruel and morally bankrupt, but it will also do great harm to the poor, the vulnerable, the sick, and all Americans who rely on the benefits that federal workers provide every day, and it weakens us as a nation.
Every member of Congress, regardless of where they fall on the political spectrum, should condemn this draconian and immoral approach immediately.”
IFPTE is a labor union representing upwards of 90,000 workers in the federal, public, and private sectors.
