IFPTE Responds to New Jersey, Virginia Election Results

“Governor-Elect Sherrill was far and away the better candidate for IFPTE’s membership, while the same can be said of Spanberger and the IFPTE-represented federal workers living in Virginia”

WASHINGTON, DC – On behalf of its 90,000 members throughout North America, including thousands of members employed by the State of New Jersey, the International Federation of Professional and Technical Engineers (IFPTE) issued the following statement in response to yesterday’s statewide election results in New Jersey and Virginia and state and local elections across the United States:

“Last night’s results, in which Democratic candidates across the board in both New Jersey and Virginia scored overwhelming victories over their Republican counterparts, signal a clear rebuke to the anti-worker, Union-busting policies being promulgated by the Trump Administration.  IFPTE was pleased to see that Abigail Spanberger and Mikie Sherrill, two former House members who were stalwart supporters of IFPTE’s membership while in Congress, prevailed in Virginia and New Jersey, respectively.  Both these stellar candidates ran campaigns that condemned the onslaught against federal employees and their Unions coming from President Trump and his administration.  In New Jersey, where IFPTE represents upwards of 20,000 public sector workers, Governor-Elect Sherrill was far and away the better candidate for IFPTE’s membership, while the same can be said of Spanberger and the IFPTE-represented federal workers living in Virginia.  And across the country, from New York to California, IFPTE members canvassed for candidates and causes that will advance our pro-worker, pro-union agenda. Last night's results show that when union members mobilize and advocate for the issues that matter to working people, we win.

“IFPTE is hopeful that last night’s results will result in some soul-searching and eventual course correction by the Trump Administration with respect to their anti-federal work and anti-union actions and their unpopular policies that are making it much harder for Americans to achieve a better life.”

IFPTE is a labor union representing upwards of 90,000 across North America, including upwards of 15,000 government workers residing in both New Jersey and Virginia.
