Metal Trades Department, AFL-CIO, and IFPTE Welcomes Alana Schaeffer as Federal Representative
Washington, DC--The Metal Trades Department, AFL-CIO, and IFPTE is proud to announce the appointment of Alana Schaeffer as the Department’s newest Federal Representative effective June 1, 2026.
Schaeffer most recently served as President of the Portsmouth Metal Trades Council, where she earned widespread respect as a skilled community activist, effective lobbyist, and tireless advocate for federal employees and working families. Throughout her years of leadership, she became known for her unwavering commitment to union members, her ability to build strong relationships across the labor movement, and her deep understanding of the challenges facing workers in both the public and private sectors.
“Alana brings with her a wealth of experience, a strong voice for working people, and a proven record of leadership,” says Metal Trades Department President Dale M. Troll. “Her warmth, depth of knowledge, and dedication to the labor movement will make her an invaluable asset to the Department and to our affiliated unions and councils.”
During her tenure with the Portsmouth Metal Trades Council, Schaeffer was a leading advocate for federal workers, shipyard employees, and collective bargaining rights. She worked extensively with elected officials and labor allies to advance policies that protect workers and strengthen the nation’s industrial and defense workforce.
As Federal Representative, Schaeffer will work closely with affiliated unions, Federal Employee Metal Trades Councils, and labor partners on organizing, legislative advocacy, collective bargaining support, and strategic initiatives affecting federal-sector metal trades workers.
