Earlier this year, President Trump fired several members of the board that controls the Tennessee Valley Authority, the largest public utility in the country. Many community members in the Tennessee Valley are concerned that this is all part of a scheme to bring in a new board and CEO at TVA who will sell off our publicly-owned assets to private corporations.
If they manage to sell off TVA’s assets, our electric bills will go up, highly trained union workers will lose good-paying jobs, and the nearly 300,000 acres of public land that TVA manages for camping, hiking, fishing, and hunting could be put in the hands of companies that will use these resources for profit instead of the public good. We can’t allow this plan to move forward.
Trump has nominated five new board members to TVA who will make important decisions that will impact the economy, electricity prices, air and water quality, and public lands access for years to come. Unfortunately, these nominees could work to advance Trump’s pro-privatization agenda and are largely unqualified, with some having deeply concerning personal and professional histories. The Senate is holding a confirmation hearing for the nominees in late October — we need to tell them that TVA needs expertise on its board of directors, not pro-privatization auctioneers.
