IFPTE Canadian Locals Gather in Winnipeg for Semi-Annual Meeting of the CCL
TEAM/Local 161 and WAPSO/Local 162 welcomed leaders from sister Canadian IFPTE Locals, the Society/Local 160, and SCMMA/Local 222, to Winnipeg for the Council of Canadian Locals’ second meeting of the year, occurring on August 22nd. The Local leaders were joined by special guest Ian Cantello, President of the Regina Civic Middle Management Association (RCMMA), as well as IFPTE President Matt Biggs, who attended virtually, and IFPTE Canadian Area staff.
The group’s discussion focused significantly on plans for the next IFPTE Manitoba Legislative Advocacy Conference and ideas for fighting back against the drastic job loss that has occurred from TEAM and Manitoba since Bell Canada acquired MTS in 2017.
The day before the CCL meeting, WAPSO Local 162 invited event attendees to join with its Board of Directors for a presentation by staff of the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation, followed by a 1919 Winnipeg General Strike guided bus tour led by local labour leaders, Paul Moist, and President of the Winnipeg Labour Council (WLC), Melissa Dvorak, and a backyard BBQ at the home of WAPSO President, Richard Mahé. Also in attendance at the BBQ to speak and spend time with IFPTE members were Bea Bruske, President of the Canadian Labour Congress, Kevin Rebeck, President of the Manitoba Federation of Labour, and Melissa Dvorak, WLC President.
