IFPTE Condemns Latest Round of Canadian Tariffs, Failure to Assist in Wildfire Relief Efforts
“Trump tariffs, coupled with the U.S. federal government’s failure to assist Canada in fighting the raging wildfires, is punitive and shameful”
WASHINGTON, DC – International Federation of Professional and Technical Engineers (IFPTE) President, Matt Biggs, and Secretary-Treasurer, Gay Henson, jointly released the following statement in response the latest round of tariffs imposed on Canada by President Trump, and the American government’s failure to assist Canada in their efforts to fight the raging wildfires:
“President Trump recently commented about penalizing Canada in relation to the wildfires in Northern Ontario. At the same time, the United States has failed to offer any support to our number one ally in fighting these fires. Simply stated, this is no way to treat our number one trading partner, and our number one ally!
“Tariff policy is meant to be implemented to both enhance domestic manufacturing and protect and grow the good paying, Union jobs that come along with said manufacturing. Sadly, and once again, President Trump’s latest announcement to impose fifty percent tariffs on Canadian goods and services is neither strategic nor to the benefit of working families. Instead, they will do great harm to workers and industries in both the United States and Canada.
“Make no mistake, the Trump tariffs, coupled with the U.S. federal government’s failure to assist Canada in fighting the raging wildfires, is punitive and shameful. Given that many of the goods being targeted are covered by the USMCA, we fully expect legal challenges to come. In the meantime, IFPTE urges the United States government to help Canada fight the wildfires, just as Canada has helped the United States many times over in responding to natural disasters.”
