Society Engages with Members and Communities in Northern Ontario

At the end of April, Society of United Professionals/IFPTE Local 160 President Rebecca Caron, NWMO Local Vice President Mike Borrelli, External Relations Officer Mike Belmore, and NWMO Unit Director Issac Werner travelled to Ignace, Ontario for a week of outreach, engagement, and connection with members and local stakeholders.

The delegation visited the site where the Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) plans to build its Deep Geological Repository for spent nuclear fuel. The team also attended the Northern Ontario Municipal Association (NOMA) conference in Thunder Bay, further strengthening the Society’s ties with northern communities.

Meetings with local leaders were a key part of the visit. In Ignace, the team met with Mayor Kimberly Baigrie, Councillor Janet Lett, and Chief Administrative Officer Aaron Gullins to discuss the Society’s role in supporting the community’s growth and development. In Dryden, productive conversations were held with Mayor Jack Harrison, Councillors Bill Latham and Catherine Kiewning, and CAO Roger Nesbitt.

A highlight of the trip was the Society Member Appreciation Night at Sleeping Giant Barrel House. Members from across the region attended —including IESO, OPG, Hydro One, NWMO, and Legal Aid Ontario.

The Local thanks all who helped make the week such a success and looks forward to continuing this important work in northern Ontario.
