World Day for Decent Work: Defending the Right to Strike

Observed annually on October 7, the World Day for Decent Work is an opportunity for the labour movement to take action for decent work to be placed at the centre of economic and government policy, including the protection of fundamental workers rights.

This year, Canada’s unions are focusing on the right to strike, as Bill C-39 raises fresh concerns about federal restrictions on strike action. Those concerns are being echoed internationally, with global labour bodies, including the AFL-CIO, warning about threats to the right to strike and reinforcing that meaningful collective bargaining depends on workers retaining the ability to take strike action.
