Local 160's Empowerment Conference Brings Members Together

Last week, members of the Society of United Professionals/Local 160 came together in five locations for the union’s Empowerment Day 2026, a day of learning, connection and reflection centred on the theme of Wellbeing, Psychological Safety and Belonging. 

Conference attendees included IFPTE President Matt Biggs, who brought greetings and underscored the importance of equity and solidarity across the labour movement. IFPTE staff representative Anna Liu was also on hand to introduce a performance on behalf of the Society’s Pride & Solidarity Committee. 

Throughout the day, participants took part in presentations, discussions and performances exploring psychological safety, equity, inclusion, and ways to build workplaces and union spaces where everyone feels a sense of belonging. 

Empowerment Day 2026 reaffirmed the union’s commitment to fostering inclusive, supportive workplaces and strengthening connections among members. The discussions and shared experiences throughout the day highlighted the important role collective action plays in creating a culture where everyone can thrive.
