Nearly 200 Society Members Rally in Solidarity with Striking WSIB Workers
Nearly 200 Society members from Hydro One joined a solidarity rally in support of striking Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) workers, calling on the Ford government and the WSIB to deliver fair wages, end U.S. outsourcing, and improve workplace health and safety.
Despite distributing $4 billion in employer rebates over the past year, the WSIB has failed to address the core concerns of its frontline workers. These workers—represented by OCEU/CUPE 1750—are fighting for a fair contract after years of stagnant wages and the erosion of job security.
In direct contradiction to the Ford government’s stated commitment to protecting Ontario jobs, 26 positions are now at risk due to outsourcing to U.S.-based company Iron Mountain. Even more concerning, workers on the picket lines have reported harassment and surveillance by private investigators—an alarming response to lawful strike action.
The Society stands firmly with our union siblings at OCEU/CUPE 1750 and applauds the resolve of the 3,600 WSIB workers refusing to accept unjust conditions.
When Society members joined the picket line, CBC Toronto took notice. As IFPTE President Matt Biggs was quoted:
"You are showing what courage looks like. You are showing what solidarity looks like. And you are writing a chapter in the long history of workers standing up for justice."
