Society of United Professionals Hosts Empowerment Conference and Council

Nearly 200 members from across Ontario and Saskatchewan gathered in Toronto on December 6 for the Society of United Professionals/IFPTE Local 160’s annual Empowerment Conference. This year’s theme, Leadership Interventions, brought together a dynamic lineup of speakers who explored how equity at every level of the union can drive meaningful change within the union and across the broader labour movement. The conference also provided an important space to celebrate the tremendous work of the Society’s Equity Committees.

IFPTE President Matt Biggs delivered opening greetings, commending the Local on its steadfast commitment to equity and its leadership in promoting progressive, member-driven change. “Your work is shaping not only your Local, but charting a path for our entire union,” President Biggs told attendees.

The following day, Society Council convened under the theme Leadership in Action: Building Our Collective Power. Over two days, Council Delegates participated in presentations, workshops, and debate to guide the Local’s work. Discussions focused on strengthening collaboration, supporting member priorities, and deepening the union’s role within the provincial and national labour community.

Across the multi-day gathering, IFPTE President Matt Biggs, Secretary-Treasurer Gay Henson, and International Representative Anna Liu joined members in conversations about the challenges and opportunities ahead. President Biggs and Secretary-Treasurer Henson brought greetings on behalf of the International and provided updates on key developments affecting IFPTE members across North America.
